The World Of The Cold War - 980 Words

When the second world war ended in 1945, the U.S. emerged as a world power. Even though America was already a major player, the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the defeat of Germany, made sure that America stayed on top. However, when the Cold War started in 1947, the race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. for top nation was on. In the last few months of the war, the world leaders would meet and decide on how to take care of Germany and the rest of Europe when the war finally ended. It was agreed that Germany would be divided into sections, controlled by America, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and France. Roosevelt, president at the time, and Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister, both wanted Germany to have free elections, as well as all of the countries that were liberated. Stalin agreed to this but would later break his promise and installed governments dominated by Soviet Union officials. In 1947, President Truman issued a doctrine that offered support to any countries threatened by Soviet forces or communist ideas. The doctrine was seen by the communists as an open declaration of the Cold War. Another initiative of Truman’s, the Marshall Plan, was an initiative to provide aid to Western Europe. It was made available to every country involved in the war but to receive help, each country had to support democracy and free elections.
